The United States was divided.Southern states broke away to form their own Confederacy.Northern
states remained and fought to save the Union.Northeastern Pennsylvania sent soldiers to defend the Union in the 1860s.More
than 600,000 Americans died in union-confederacy Civil War battles fought more than 140 years ago mostly across the south.
The Confederacy pushed into Northern territory several times in an attempt to disrupt the Union's supply routes.
Those invasions bring several Civil War battle sites to South Central Pennsylvania and Maryland and are great attractions
for history buffs looking to take a weekend trip.
Battlefields in Gettysburg and Antietam are now National Parks. Pennsylvania has museums that bring the Civil War era to life.
markers and memorials of small skirmishes dot southern Pennsylnania for those who like to ride through the past. If you can,
I urge all to visit Gettysburg .Our thanks to all who have visited this site ,please sign the guest book on the last page

THE DEVIL'S DEN
The Devil's Den was an enormous collection of boulders and rocks that were occupied by Captain James E. SMITH's 4th NY.Battery and
BG Hobart Ward's Brigade. Hood attacked Devil's Den with Benning's and Anderson's
Brigades. The 1st Texas and 15th Georgia charged Smith's Battery and nearly overwhelmed it when the 124th
NY Brigade under command of Major James Cromwell led a counterattack. Cromwell was instantly killed and relieved
by Col. Augustus Van Horne Ellis who was also killed. The fighting in the Devil's Den was confused and desperate
as both sides struggled to occupy the mass of boulders. Eventually, the Confederates managed to capture three of Smith's guns
and occupy the Den and the ridge above.
